According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the population of Australia in 2017 was 24,702,900. Last year 1,227 of those people died on our roads, as a percentage this represents 0.005% of our community. As a statistic this number appears insignificant, doesn’t it….but is it really?
The road toll is not just a number, these are lives tragically lost. Every death is someone’s grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, husband, wife, brother, sister, or child. When you think about it, it’s closer to home than you realise. Any loss of life on our roads is one too many and totally unacceptable until it gets to zero.
Across Australia, state government road authorities and construction companies continue in their combined efforts to design and build safer roads. History demonstrates that countless road crashes are preventable, and that the right interventions lead to significant positive impacts.
Since the 1970’s, Australia has continuously achieved large and lasting road safety gains from:
However, in spite of these achievements, accidents on our roads continue to cause large numbers of deaths and serious injuries each year. The annual economic cost of road crashes in Australia is enormous - estimated at $27 billion per annum, not to mention the devastating social impacts.
Imagine a world with zero road fatalities…we do. For the past 80 years, we have been a part of the ever-evolving driving experience and worked hard to make roads safer. Driven by the passion to improve every life through our unique approach to innovation, we are preparing for the driving experience of the future - one that promises to be safer and more efficient.
We understand our important role in making our roads safer and our commitment to improving, protecting and saving lives extends far beyond our products and technologies. On this basis, 3M in partnership with the ACRS (Australian College of Road Safety) have created an environment where innovative ideas can come together, be shared, collaborated, celebrated, and most importantly, replicated in other regions or capacities to make a much bigger impact on road safety. 3M is extremely proud to partner with the ACRS, to create such an award, the 3M-ACRS Diamond Road Safety Award that provides both recognition and reward for road safety professionals within the Australian private or public sector to submit road safety programs that save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
Enter and get recognised - 3M invites all individuals, partnerships, community groups, local and state government agencies to submit their Road Safety Programs for a chance to win a trip to the U.S.A.
